Postglacial Distribution Patterns of Mammals in the Southern Coastal Regions of Alaska

چکیده

D URING the Wisconsin glaciation the present land areas of the coastal regions of Alaska bordering the Gulf of Alaska were virtually completely overridden by ice. The now existing flora and fauna of the region have presumably become established in the 10,000 years since the recession of the ice. Swarth discussed the origins of the fauna of the “Sitkan District’’ in 1936, and since then additional knowledge of the glacial history of the southern coastal regions of Alaska has become available, permitting a new interpretation of the distribution patterns of mammals (Heusser 1960, Miller 1958, Flint 1957, and Karlstrom 1964). The present distribution of mammals in this region, although complicated by the phenomenon of insularity, reflects the sequence of their arrival and their relationship to specific refugia. A brief review of the late-Wisconsin geology and postglacial vegetation of the southern coastal areas of Alaska will serve as a useful base for understanding the mammalian distribution patterns of the region. Heusser (1960) has shown that the ice, covering virtually all this region, receded about 10,000 years ago. The islands of the Alexander Archipelago were apparently free of ice at least a few hundred years before the adjacent mainland whereas in Prince William Sound, on the Kenai Peninsula, and on Kodiak Island glacial recession took place approximately 1,000-2,000 years later than in the Alexander Archipelago. In the intervening region of the mainland, from Mt. Fairweather to Cape Suckling, late-Wisconsin ice apparently did not cover much more land than is now occupied by glaciers although major postglacial tectonism has been a complicating factor in this area (Miller 1958). As the ice melted, associated changes in sea-level took place. In the Alexander Archipelago it is probable that during the Wisconsin glacial maximum, sea-level was lower than at present, exposing greater expanses

Drought Monitoring in Southern Coasts of Iran

Abstract In this research, SPEI (standardized precipitation and evaporation index) was used as an alternative index to SPI to study drought in warm southern coastal regions of Iran. Drought has a multi-scale nature that can be analyzed in time scales via analysis of precipitation and temperature data. Therefore, data were colected from 105 synoptic stations in Iran in 2015; Respective stati...

Effects of Pleistocene glaciations on population structure of North American chestnut-backed chickadees.

The postglacial recolonization of northern North America was heavily influenced by the Pleistocene glaciation. In the Pacific Northwest, there are two disjunct regions of mesic temperate forest, one coastal and the other interior. The chestnut-backed chickadee is one of the species associated with this distinctive ecosystem. Using seven microsatellite markers we found evidence of population str...

Review Papers:Species diversity and distribution pattern of marine mammals of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman - Iranian Waters

A total of 98 marine mammal records from Iranian coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman were compiled of which 66 are previously unpublished new records.  Seventy-nine were from the Persian Gulf and 16 from the Gulf of Oman coast.  The largest numbers of records were from Qeshm Island and Bushehr Provinces. Records of finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides), Indo-pacific humpba...

Predicted Shifts in Small Mammal Distributions and Biodiversity in the Altered Future Environment of Alaska: An Open Access Data and Machine Learning Perspective

Climate change is acting to reallocate biomes, shift the distribution of species, and alter community assemblages in Alaska. Predictions regarding how these changes will affect the biodiversity and interspecific relationships of small mammals are necessary to pro-actively inform conservation planning. We used a set of online occurrence records and machine learning methods to create bioclimatic ...

Investigating past range dynamics for a weed of cultivation, Silene vulgaris

Since the last glacial maximum (LGM), many plant and animal taxa have expanded their ranges by migration from glacial refugia. Weeds of cultivation may have followed this trend or spread globally following the expansion of agriculture or ruderal habitats associated with human-mediated disturbance. We tested whether the range expansion of the weed Silene vulgaris across Europe fit the classical ...
